City plans to expand Driving Park recreation center, add pool

Driving Park gets swimming pool, upgraded recreation center

Setterlin Building Co. Councilwoman Priscilla R. Tyson did not attend the meeting. The community center at Driving Park will be completely overhauled with a new ventilation unit and plumbing. The electrical system and classrooms will be upgraded. An addition to the building will provide a new dance studio, gym and fitness center.

A game room and lobby will also be added. The building will go from about 9, square feet to 24, square feet. Also new will be an 8,square-foot swimming pool that will have a zero-depth entry, water slides and lanes for lap swimming.

The pool will resemble some of the newer aquatic centers near recreation centers. The council approved that budget nearly a month ago. The project will be financed with municipal bonds. Mayor Michael B. Coleman said in March that the recreation center is in need of an overhaul and that having new areas to gather instills pride in neighborhoods. He said residents in the area will pack the park.

Much of that money has gone to addressing vacant and abandoned homes in the area. Councilwoman Eileen Y.
