Emirates Driving Institute and Continental Team up for Tyre Safety Campaign

If you live in the emirate of Abu Dhabi, obtaining a drivers licence is fairly simple. The process begins when you open a traffic file with the Abu Dhabi Drivers and Vehicles Licensing Department and then register for driving classes at the Emirates Driving Company.

Unlike Dubai which has many driving schools. Abu Dhabi has a single driving school that has trained all the registered motorists in the city. It was established in and is currently the only driving school in Abu Dhabi. This includes traffic rules, road markings, road signs , driving speed limits as well as driving behaviour and road manners. The institute also covers topics such as driving under difficult conditions, how to deal with critical situations, the physics of a car crash and overall passenger safety.

For the courses concerning the Heavy Vehicle and Heavy Bus categories, the Emirates Driving Company also covers topics such as ECO-driving, fire prevention, managing emergency situations, etc. In order to start practical sessions, the applicants must complete eight theory classes and pass the theory test. After successfully passing the theory test, applicants can begin practical training sessions with an instructor.

For beginners, a minimum of 30 hours of practical training must be completed before taking the final road test. Those who have prior driving experience can complete their lessons within 10 to 20 hours. However, this can vary depending on the type of vehicle the applicant chooses to learn. To know the exact details of the process check out this step by step guide on obtaining an Abu Dhabi driving licence.

In order to do so, the applicant has to first open a file with the Abu Dhabi Drivers and Vehicles Licensing Department. After the file has been opened, first-time applicants can then approach the EDC and submit the following documents to register themselves for driving classes: Application number of the file open with Abu Dhabi Police Drivers and Vehicle Licensing Department Copy of any other driving licence if available No Objection Certificate NOC from the guardian, if the applicant is under 18 Original Emirates ID Copy of valid passport with visa page for residents 1 recent passport size photo of the applicant Copy of valid training permit, if available Once the registration is complete and the fees are paid, applicants can begin their driving classes at the EDC.
